What is hypnotherapy?

Many people ask me, “what is hypnotherapy?”. To understand hypnotherapy, you first need to understand hypnosis. Hypnotherapy is a behavioral modification therapy that uses hypnosis as it’s primary model.

Hypnosis is a totally relaxed, hyper-aware state of intense focus. I know, that’s a mouthful, but that is the best description I can quickly give a person.

You are not asleep while under hypnosis

Even though the word “hypnosis” derives from the name of the Greek God Hypnos, the God of sleep, hypnosis is NOT SLEEP. In fact, it is a hyper-awareness. It is a state where you are intensely aware, yet unbothered by peripheral events such as sounds in the room, other people around you, etc.

In the state of hypnosis, you will be able to open your eyes and look around the room if you want to, although most hypnotists will have you close your eyes for better visualization and less external distraction during the session. It allows you to be fully focused on the hypnotherapist and ultra-suggestible.

What does it mean to be suggestible?

Your subconscious mind is made up of little “programs” (similar to the apps in a computer or phone). These contain “knowns” and “unknowns”. They operate below your conscious awareness and literally control every part of your life.

Sometimes these are good, because they control things like your heart rate, breathing, digestion, etc. so you don’t ever have to consciously think about it. I mean, what would life be like if you had to actually think about every beat of your heart and every breath? And therefore we put things like that on automatic.

Sometimes these are not so good. For example, what if one of the “knowns” is constantly telling you that you don’t deserve to live a happy life, or that you are supposed to be poor and humble? You wouldn’t need or want that, yet you wouldn’t even be aware of the fact that the app is even running in the background. It’s sort of like having a virus in a computer.

Being suggestible means that you are in a state where a hypnotherapist can access those apps and “change the operating system”. He or she can give you new suggestions to replace, or re-frame the old ones that are already running your life into a more pro-survival form that will actually push you in the direction that you truly want to go.

Your suggestibility is the degree to which the critical filter of your mind allows the therapist to bypass it and talk directly to your subconscious mind. When you are suggestible, the hypnotherapist has direct administrative access to the operating system…just like in a computer.

The only difference is that YOU still have final say. Nobody can control your mind but you. If you are ever given a suggestion under hypnosis that you disagree with on a conscious level, you always have the ability to override and/or cancel the suggestion under your own free will.

Your hypnotherapist is the virus detection software

A hypnotherapist is trained professional who knows how to interpret what your mind is saying and to help you alter that message to something that more closely aligns with what you want that message to be.

He or she knows how to detect and flush out those programs that are causing you grief, stopping you from achieving your goals, causing your habits, and generally slowing you down in life, then replace them with suggestions and new programs that will quickly get you moving in the direction you want to move in.

The operating system determines the outcome

Every computer has an operating system, and so does your mind. The operating system is the core blueprint that determines how the computer operates and responds to various scenarios. The computer has no choice but to follow the operating system. Your subconscious mind has no choice but to follow the blueprint that YOU created for it.

If you want the computer to do something that it is currently incapable of doing, you need to update the operating system or replace it with a completely different operating system.

The irony is that while most people update their operating system in their computers several times a year, they will go through their entire life and never update the operating system of their mind…and it has been out-dated for years and years most of the time.

Why would you take better care of your laptop that you would your own mind?

Most people are unaware of the fact that they have choices when it comes to their mind, and the blueprint that determines their decisions, career, relationships, wealth, health, and many other parts of their lives.
