What is the Difference Between Meditation & Hypnotherapy?
Many people from all walks of life either meditate, or try hypnotherapy as a means of improving areas of their lives, however, very few of them truly understand either or these modalities, or the state they are striving for.
Having an understanding of this process, and of the process of Hypnotherapy, can profoundly affect your ability to get the results you seek.
I’ve often run into clients who have tried meditation (especially guided meditation) who’ve had limited results, or even no results.
There Is a Reason For This
First of all, let’s explore the differences and similarities between meditation, guided meditation, hypnosis, and self hypnosis.
What is Meditation?
Meditation, whether guided or unguided, is focused on “clearing the mind”. The person meditating tends to focus on one particular item (such as breathing, top of the head, or other body part or function), or on nothing at all.
The idea behind meditation is to get the attention off of ones problems, life, environment, and body, and focus on some question, affirmation, or some other very specific topic. It is very relaxing, and has many benefits.
What is Guided Meditation?
This is where the person meditating listens to a recording of a meditation instructor who gradually guides the subject into a very focused state.
Guided meditation usually includes relaxing background music which may or may not include the use of binaural beats to help the person more easily enter the desired state of mind.
What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is designed to overload the ones conscious mind with message units to the point where the “fight/flight” mechanism is activated and the hypnotist or hypnotherapist can bypass the subjects critical factor and gain access to the unconscious mind, causing a state of hightened suggestibility.
At this point the therapist can enter suggestions that will cause the subject to modify his or her core beliefs, and thus modify his or her behaviour in a favorable way.
What is Self Hypnosis?
Self hypnosis is NOT listening to a recording of an actual hypnotherapist. This would be considered actual hypnosis, since the session is still being conducted by an actual hypnotherapist.
Self hypnosis is a hypnosis session where the subject causes the hypnotic state in himself by organizing the various message units and thought processes in order to gain access to the hypersuggestible state.
Similarities and Differences
While the desired mental state of meditation is very similar to a mild hypnotic state, the actual processes and suggestions differ greatly.
Meditation tries to “still” the mind, allowing the practitioner to fully relax and focus on various affirmations, mantras, etc, while hypnosis tries to overstimulate the conscious mind so as to trigger the fight/flight mechanism and create a state of hyper suggestibility, allowing the therapist to install very specific suggestions.
Hypnotherapy is a powerful and effective behavioral modification technique, whereas meditation is more of a relaxation technique that creates better focus, less stress, and reaches toward enlightenment.
Which is Better, Hypnotherapy or Meditation?
It depends on what you are trying to accomplish. My recommendation is to utilize meditation, hypnotherapy, and self hypnosis on a regular basis.
One is not particularly “better” for you than the other. They are both very beneficial.
When you have a specific habit you are trying to break, or when you want to get over a fear, or when you are having difficulties sleeping, etc, I would recommend hypnotherapy.
For basic relaxaction and stress relief, I would recommend meditation for at least 15 mainutes each day.
What Can Hypnotherapy Help With?
The list is endless, and constantly growing. However, here are just some of the areas hypnotherapy has been proven to be effective with.
- Better Sleep
- Quit Smoking
- Weight Loss
- Overcoming Fears
- Faster Healing
- Pain Reduction
- More Confidence
- Better Self Esteem
- Heightened Awareness
- More Responsiblity
- Sports Performance
- Study Enhancement
- Better Focus
- Dealing w/Death and Loss
- Coping w/End of Life
- Past Life Regression
- Dealing w/Trauma
- Relationship Issues
- Child Behavioural Issues
There are many more specialties, however, these are some of the more common ones that I am equipped to deal with.
Is Hypnotherapy Different from Psychoanalysis and Behavioural Modification Therapy?
Let’s put it terms of actual studies and proven results…
Where it takes a psychologist between 500 and 600 hours of psychoanalysis to get around a 30% improvement in a subject (especially when dealing with trauma, fears, etc), and where there would be only about a 40% improvement in the same condition with 200 to 300 hours of behavioural modification therapy; hypnotherapy has been shown to get around a 95% improvement in 5 or 6 one-hour sessions.
In terms of saving time and money alone, this is very impressive, but in terms of the relief the subject gets in a very short perioud of time, hypnotherapy is priceless.
Because of this, hypnotherapy is on the rise, and being used and recommended by more and more medical professionals every day.
Hypnotherapy has no side-effects other than better self esteem, more confidence, less fear, and overall well-being. This means it is safe for anyone.
Meditation also has no side-effects other than less stress, and higher elightenment. This means that it is also safe for anyone.
Can you think of any part of your life, health, or behaviour that you would like to experience positive changes in? If so, consider trying hypnotherapy.
